I somehow have an addiction or something on VPSs, you know, just to see how things work on a Linux machine, what OS is right for me, how to administer my own server whether its a web server or anything I could think of with full root access. But I don’t spend much on that. I just purchase a cheap low-end VPS just to test things out. But I recently found a host that offers one for free!
Host1Free offers a Free VPS that you can play around, and the specs are:
CentOS 5/6 or Debian 5/6 10GB HDD Space Unlimited Bandwidth 128MB RAM - 640MB VSwap
I’ve got nothing to loose so I signed up for one and was just approved a few hours ago and here’s my benchmark on the VPS:
# bash bench.sh CPU model : Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2600 CPU @ 3.40GHz
Number of cores : 2 CPU frequency : 424.049 MHz Total amount of ram : 128 MB Total amount of swap : 640 MB System uptime : 8:15, Download speed : (10.4MB/s) I/O speed : 53.4MB/s
Not bad eh?
I think this is great for students out there that aren’t ready for online purchasing or better yet, no extra money at all to test one online with internet connectivity. Learning basic Linux commands and administering a server and etc. It is also great for web developers to put their projects online and have someone test it out for them.
It’s really helpful to have one in hand to test.
Oh yeah, the link? Here it is!

Have fun! And be sure to read the ToS so you won’t loose your VPS as this will come in handy some day.

Can’t do that much on this VPS so, I’ll just play around with it, test and sorts…
