How To Install New Fonts For GIMP 2.4 on XP

February 7th, 2008

I’m using GIMP 2.4 on Windows XP on all my images. And today I’m going to show to you how to install new fonts for GIMP. My girlfriend asked me “I’ve already installed my downloaded fonts at C:\WINDOWS\Fonts and restarted The GIMP and still the new fonts is not there, why?“. The GIMP is reading installed fonts on windows once it is installed and stores it on a cache file. So all you have to do is delete those cache and run The GIMP again. Here’s a step by step on how to do it on Windows XP:

After installing the desired fonts to C:\WINDOWS\Fonts do these steps:

  1. Start>Run then type %USERPROFILE%

    User Profile

  2. Then go to Tools>Folder Options

    Folder Options

  3. Because the folder is hidden, you have to show hidden files and folders, to do that go to View tab and select the Show hidden files and folders and click OK.

  4. Then go to Local Settings>Temp>fontconfig>cache and delete what’s in that folder. If you want to hide back the files and folders, just go back to step 3. You can now restart your GIMP and enjoy making graphics.

Cache

That’s it. :)

I did this and still none of my fonts will work. I keep getting a message Invalid UTF-8 data in file. My font works in other programs and is a TrueType font. Any suggestions :)

    Hello Amber,

I’m not a GIMP expert, so I don’t exactly know why that is. But try reinstalling the GIMP. Thanks for visiting my site :)

Thanks so much for this tutorial! I have been really puzzled why my fonts just wouldn’t show up no matter how many times I’ve refreshed and restarted GIMP. After following your tutorial’s instructions, I finally saw my fonts :D

Dude, I’m not a fan of making comments, but you deserve it !
    Thanks for this.
You are right, open source rules….I should throw my windows to the trash and start using linux now. I mean, I have lost so much time on windows troubles, and this is the proof of it. Half an hour to add fonts….great.
